My submission to the What-If game is this:

What if Stoner had gotten the AR-10 ready a few years earlier...

IMHO there never would have been a M14....

A few years earlier everyone would have laughed at it since it barely worked as a proto-type.

Let me fix my post:

Modern Firearms on the AR-10 -

"AR-10, with the first prototype built in 1955, came too late for these trials, and was too unconventional for conservative minds in the US Army, and consequently lost the trials to the T44 rifle, which was adopted in the 1957 as the M14."

IMHO, you're wrong

You keep throwing out little "snipits" (quotes) from various places that are NOTHING more than opinion of the WRITER. No more correct than YOUR opinion or MINE.
The encyclopedia info. you posted (that I quoted above) is included in this. If you are looking for numbers and dates, I would trust their info. fully, because that is easy to research----With Wikipedia, if you are looking for REASONS for ANYTHING---you will get limited info/research from a writer.

To prove their lack of gun knowledge----read the part that says "and its lack of DURABILITY under harsh desert conditions......"
Durability? -

When you mount your Benelli M2 Accessories with Urbino stock & cheek riser normally but quickly, are you looking thru the sights or over them? Also, how did the Urbino fit your Benelli M2 Accessories especially in the trigger area? IIRC, the Urbino for the M4 was tight in the trigger area. Mesa said they would have to modify the M4 mold design slightly sometime in the future. TIA!
