Road Blogging: I bought a Sony Vaio SZ220 to replace my Dell Inspiron laptop that I use at work for the EMR. (Or EHR, if you want to be trendy about it.) It came with a 30-day trial offer of Cingular's wireless WAN service. I'm blogging this on the Pennsylvania Turnpike en route to Washington, D.C., where earlier today my comrades marched on the Capitol. I'm skipping the political content of the meeting and focusing on education and shopping.

The wireless WAN isn't too bad. The connection is slower than DSL - too slow to be useful for the also-slow VPN that lets me connect to the office. One could go into a coma waiting for the delay time between functions. But, it's adequate for blogging.

By the way, $11 to travel the Pennsylvannia Turnpike from the Ohio border to the route 70 exit is over-rated. It has to be one of the worst insterstates in the nation. What do they do with that money?

Most of the 22 rifles on the market will readily accept a scope. You can pick uo a 22 scope for $8 at wallymart, made in China. Tasco has sold the same classic 4x15 for 40 years, still costs about $12. They also offer a $12 red dot sight from Crossman. If you use the larger knobs for the base of the rings, you can readily yank off the scope in the field if it becomes damaged. At these prices, they're cheaper than bullets. Get a rifle that will take a standard 22 scope, then use iron sights if you want, but maintain the option of adding a scope. PS: Now that red dot scopes are so inexpensive, the AR7 Scout can be topped with a FAMOUS MAKER scope for about nineteen dollhairs. The AR7 has always been my top favorite for wilderness survival. Deer rifles are nice, but in the real world you'd shoot a lot more rabbit than deer.

With all of the stuff available for ARs right now, there is no way in hell I'd part with one. You should be pimping out that rat gun with extra picitinny rails, red dot sight, tac light... There is just so much stufffffff available for the M16 family. You could accessorize like Imelda Marcos! That Baeowoulf looks like fun, a step up to a deer cartridge. Be ready to pay through the anus for your ammo, even if you reload. You could get a douple rifle case and carry both upper & rifle, all James Bond-like.

Thinking of a new upper for the AR
Wow, to have two active AR15 threads at the same time! In any case, I have a bonus check coming up soon, and was hoping to save up the money. then I saw this: http://50beowulf.com/PDF/50Beowulf_GB_2002.pdf It looks totally useless for me(a non-hunter) but damn, it looks like fun. The thought of shooting a round that is 50 cal, hits harder than a 45.70...out of an AR...*giggle* I was thinking of seling the old AR as it no longer does much for me...until I saw I could buy the upper for this mammer jammer. Anyone have any experience with the 50 Beowulf? I had 5 glocks and I picked up a gun magazine last year and read the article on the xd, Now i was a very avid glock fan and always told everyone they would never get me to change to any other handgun...After readuing that article on it being handgun of the yr I got all tingly inside and went out and bought an xd 40 after 2 months i had put 4 thousand plus rounds thru it without even so much as a jam a birp or any other thing....I noticed after about 2500 rounds a sudden change where it had just became even smoother shooting so i sold every glock i had and now i own a 357 sig xd a 40 xd 45 gap xd and now a new 45 acp xd just last week!!!!!! Ripoff not in the least its almost 100 to 200 dollars less than a glock depending where you buy and in my humble opinion its the best guns i have ever owned in a handgun in my life and i have had quite a few....I trust my life with springfields xd!!!!!

This A.M a reader pointed me to Gun-Toting Mayor: Lawman Or Vigilante? Its all about our favorite Jackson, Mississippi Mayor Frank Melton.

Frank is a real law and order kinda guy. He bucks the trends. He takes risks. Unfortunately, he also crosses over the line.

Here is a few things Frank has done:

• carried a concealed handgun without a permit,
• carried a gun on school grounds,
• worn police gear while participating in police activities, and
• lead a group of teenagers with sledgehammers in smashing up a house that he claimed was a drug den.

Now, just think of what would happen to you, as a citizen, if you were to do just one of these things. We'd be in jail faster than a cop can eat a donut.

Frank says that as mayor, he can do these things with impunity. That is where the burr gets firmly under my saddle.

Frank no longer sees himself as a citizen. He's not the mayor of Jackson; he is the patriarch. And that is when he has lost me.

Only when politicians live like citizens will they realize the limitations they place on the law abiding with the laws they pass. And only then will they work to lift those limitations.

100,000 Hits

I know that it is a nonevent for many sites, but, after almost 18 months, we have hit number 100,000. That is, at least according to Sitemeter. Visitor number 100k came from Harrison Township, Michigan and appears to be a middle school student researching the National Firearms Act of 1934.

At the current rate, hit number 200,000 is less than 12 months away.

In the past 18 months, there have been 444 posts, 226 bills documented and the voting record of 13 people documented. Additionally, there is a forum that can't seem to get a spark, much less a flame of interest. Obviously there is much work to do.

In the past 100 hits we have 1 hit from the House of Representatives and 2 hits from the Senate. Those folks typically come in Googling some bill number. If you have an opinion about a bill, you are welcome to make your comments on those pages. If the bill is getting active attention, odds are that someone in D.C. will see your prose.

I want to thank everyone who stops by and hope that you find the site useful. As always, your recommendations are welcome.

For short range plinking, a .22 LR rimfire. Laws also become an issue. In California, your choice of .223 can't include an AR15 (about my favorite rifle) or many other semi-autos.

In centerfire, there's a primer cup inserted into a pocket in the center of the cartridge. The firing pin dents it, firing the cartridge. One benefit is that after you use the cartridge, you can punch out the primer on your press, put in a new one and reload the cartridge for some cost savings. .223 Remington is a centerfire cartridge that's a varmint hunting standard. If you go to this URL and look at the picture of a .303 cartridge by the header "Centerfire", you'll note a circle in the center of the base. That's a primer: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cartridge_(firearms) Rimfire cartridges are only made in .22 (short, long, long rifle) and some new .17 caliber rounds I'm not up on right now. In rimfire rounds, there's no replaceable primer: a primer paste is spread around the inside base of the cartridge (the rim). The firing pin of the gun actually crushes a part of the rim, firing it. These rounds can't be replaced. Couldn't find a picture but imagine a flat base with no primer structure visible form the outside. One safety note: when firing a cartridge in a gun, you should only use a round that the gun is chambered for, it'll be stamped on the gun (usually the barrel), often both the cartridge base and the box the cartridge came in. If they don't all agree (aside from a couple cases like .38 special, shot in a .357 magnum gun) do NOT try to shoot that cartridge in that gun. As an example, you can chamber a 8mm mauser cartridge in a .30-06 rifle but trying to drive a 7.9 mm bullet down a bore 7.62 mm in diameter usually destroyed the gun and occasionally the shooter. I hope this doesn't sound patronizing, it's just that it sounded like (and this could be my reading error) you wanted to shoot both .22 rimfire and .223 or something like it in one gun.

Nice...CZs are supposed to be nice guns. One thing to keep in mind is that .22LR is only effectively accurate out to about 100 yards and a windy day can blow that. A .223 in a similar ifle might go out as far as 600 yards. The flip side is that .223 is really inexpensive ammo and you can afford to shoot with it a lot...

The C means Colt’s, the M means Magnetic particle inspected, the P for Proof fired, and the B for chrome Bore. It appears the barrel extention on these are also chromed on the "AR-15 Accessories ".
