The AR-15 Accessories is an American 7.62 mm battle rifle developed by Eugene Stoner in the late 1950s at ArmaLite, then a division of the Fairchild Aircraft Corporation. The rifle had some innovative features at the time of its introduction (1956); it was over 1 lb (0.45 kg) lighter than most other infantry rifles, and was significantly easier to control in automatic fire. The unique features of the AR-15 Accessories would eventually be developed into the U.S. Army's M16. Over its production life, the original AR-15 Accessories was built in relatively small numbers, with fewer than 10,000 rifles assembled.

ArmaLite first opened as a subdivision of Fairchild in 1954, specifically to bring new materials and designs to the firearms industry. Later that year they were joined by Eugene Stoner, a talented small arms engineer. ArmaLite was a very small organization at the time (only nine employees, including Stoner). With Stoner as chief design engineer, ArmaLite quickly released a number of interesting rifle designs. The first prototypes of the 7.62 mm AR-15 Accessories emerged during 1955 and early 1956.[1] At the time the United States Army was in the midst of testing several rifles to replace the obsolescent M1 Garand. Springfield Armory's T44E4 and heavier T44E5 were essentially updated versions of the Garand chambered for the new 7.62 mm round, while Fabrique Nationale submitted their FAL as the T48. ArmaLite's AR-15 Accessories entered the competition late, hurriedly submitting two AR-15 Accessories rifles in the fall of 1956 to the United States Army's Springfield Armory for testing. The new rifle featured a straight-line stock design, rugged elevated sights, a flash suppressor/recoil compensator, and an adjustable gas system. Initial comments by Springfield Armory test staff were favorable, and some testers commented that the AR-15 Accessories was the best lightweight automatic rifle ever tested by the Armory.[2][3]

Unfortunately for ArmaLite, the rifle's aluminum/steel composite barrel (an untried prototype design specified for the tests by ArmaLite's president, George Sullivan, over Stoner's vehement objections) burst in a torture test conducted by Springfield Armory in early 1957.[4] ArmaLite quickly replaced it with a conventional steel barrel, but the damage had been done. The final Springfield Armory report advised against adoption of the rifle, stating that "it would take five years or more to take it through tests to adoption".[3] While ArmaLite objected, it was clear that the AR-15 Accessories, a brand-new rifle still in the prototype stage, was at a disadvantage compared to competing designs with longer development cycles, and by 1957, U.S. Army infantry forces urgently required a modern, magazine-fed infantry rifle to replace the M1.[5] In the end the Army chose the conventional T44, which entered production as the M14 rifle in 1957.

An additional point of concern in the design is the inertial firing pin. A lightweight firing pin rides in a channel inside the bolt unrestrained. When the bolt locks forward during loading, the firing pin typically rides forward and impacts the primer of the chambered round. Fixed Magazine Rifle: This style of rifle is made by combining an AR-15 upper receiver with an AR-15 lower receiver which has not been specifically banned by name, and which has a fixed 10-round (maximum) magazine. In such a configuration, the rifleman could add otherwise prohibited features such as a telescoping stock and pistol grip. While there is some public perception that military-style semiautomatic rifles often see criminal use, a 2001 Justice Department study revealed that fewer than 2% of State and Federal inmates used, carried, or possessed a military-style semiautomatic gun or a fully automatic gun during their current offense [1]. Semi-automatic rifles are mistakenly believed to be capable of fully automatic fire or easily convertible to full-automatic functionality. While it is theoretically possible to convert almost a semi-automatic firearm to fully automatic, extensive equipment and machining knowledge would be required. The BATFE has specific design requirements for all firearms sold in the U.S. in order to ensure that they are not readily convertible. For example, the internal lower receiver of civilian AR-15 rifles is milled differently and has a much smaller cavity than that of the military-issue M16, and M16 parts such as the fire-control group cannot fit in a civilian rifle without extensive machining. The small number of automatic weapons confiscated from criminals are weapons smuggled illegally into the country, rather than converted semi-automatic weapons[citation needed].

By 1960, hampered by Dutch export restrictions and discouraged by the lack of arms sales to major national purchasers, Artillerie Inrichtingen decided to exit the small arms production business altogether, and ceased all production of the AR-15 Accessories under its license from Fairchild-ArmaLite. By that time, less than 10,000 AR-15 Accessoriess had been produced, mostly military select-fire rifles, with a few semi-automatic only rifles produced for civilian use.

In later years, some ex-military Sudanese and Portuguese model AR-15 Accessoriess were sold to civilian markets in the U.S., Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Previous designs generally placed the sights directly on the barrel, using a bend in the stock to align the sights at eye level while transferring the recoil down to the shoulder. Not all the reports were negative. In a series of mock-combat situations testing the AR-15, M14 and AK-47, the Army found that the AR-15's small size and light weight allowed it to be brought to bear much more quickly, just as CONARC had suggested. Their final conclusion was that an 8-man team equipped with the AR-15 would have the same firepower as a current 11-man team armed with the M14. They also found that the AR-15, as tested, was more reliable than the M14, suffering fewer stoppages and jams in tests where thousands of rounds were fired.

At this point, Fairchild had spent $1.45 million in development expenses, and wished to divest itself of its small-arms business. Fairchild sold production rights for the AR-15 to Colt Firearms in December 1959, for only $75,000 cash and a 4.5% royalty on subsequent sales. Military flash suppressors are designed to reduce the muzzle flash from the weapon to preserve the shooter's night vision, usually by directing the incandescent gases to the sides, away from the line of sight of the shooter, and to reduce the flash visible to the enemy. Military forces engaging in night combat are still visible when firing, especially with night vision gear, and must move quickly after firing to avoid receiving return fire. Limiting the amount of powder to what the length of a barrel can burn is one possible solution, but differences between individual cartridges mean that some cartridges will always have too much powder to be completely consumed, and the reduced powder load produces a lower projectile velocity. Muzzle flash can also be controlled by using cartridges with a faster-burning propellant, so that the propellant gases will already have begun to cool by the time they exit the barrel, reducing flash intensities. Faster-burning powders, however, produce less projectile velocity, which reduces the accuracy due to introducing more of a parabolic bullet flight path in place of a "flat" trajectory while also reducing lethality of the weapon through reducing energy delivered on target.
Flash suppressors reduce, or in some cases eliminate, the flash by rapidly cooling the gases as they leave the end of the barrel. Although the overall amount of burning propellant is unchanged, the density and temperature are greatly reduced, as is the brightness of the flash.

AR-15 rifles, like all semi-automatic rifles, are banned from legal ownership in all states and territories in Australia. The ban on semi-automatic rifles was introduced in 1996 in response to the Port Arthur massacre, in which 35 people were killed. The main weapon used in the attack was an AR-15. The only way somebody can legally own an AR-15/M16-type rifle in Australia is to have a Firearms Collector's Licence and the firearm deactivated (with the barrel plugged up and the action welded shut) or to have a Category C/D Firearms Licence if they are a professional animal culler or a primary producer.

The Ruger 10/22 is a semi-automatic rimfire rifle chambered in .22 Long Rifle. It has a removable 10-round (or 5-round) rotary magazine which allows the magazine to fit flush with the bottom of the stock. Higher capacity magazines are also available. A magnum version, chambered for the .22 WMR cartridge, was made from 1998 to 2006[1], and a .17 HMR version, the 10/17 was announced in 2004, but this model is no longer in production.[2] The standard version has been in production since 1964.[3]

AR-15 Accessories production was limited, though Guatemala, Burma, Italy, Cuba, Sudan and Portugal all purchased AR-15 Accessories rifles for limited issue to their military forces. Sudanese AR-15 Accessoriess were employed in frequent clashes with guerrilla forces and conflicts with neighboring countries, and a few captured rifles eventually turned up in unofficial service with various African and colonial armies, police, and guerrilla forces.[8] The AR-15 Accessories remained in service with Sudanese Special Forces until 1985. A friend bought two boxes of WWB 9mm FMJ for me since I was broke and we went to the range. The CZ 75 magazines didn't hiccup once. His PA-63 (9mm Makarov) was... interesting. The recoil drives the thing right into the web of your hand. Shoot it often enough and I can see some chafing occurring.

As for accuracy, I seemed to consistently hit about six inches low and to the left at 15 yards, though occasionally I was spot on. I think most of that was me and not the pistol though; my groupings were more like shotgun patterns. I am NOT at all in practice with handguns of any category. Fortunately, I've always been able to hit what I aim for (even drew my dad's .357 revolver, cocked it, and put a round through a hog's head at ten yards all in one motion. Without aiming.), and when I begin ranger training we're going to spend a lot of time at the range with our handguns.

Overall, I'm pleased with my CZ 75 magazine. My only complaint is that the beavertail pattern on the plastic grip plates chafes my hand; I either need to toughen up my hands or get hard rubber grip plates. I don't like the Hogue wrap-around grip.

Rifle Scopes

was looking at the GRSC CRS Rifle Scope myself and really like everything it offers! I don't like that it's a Millett with w/ a great reticule because of the Millett's weight and less than stellar performance. Some of the things mentioned above (minus the ridiculous comparison to NCstar) including the fact that no more will be made in the foreseeable future, steered me away from it.

I've come across the new Burris Rifle Scopes XTR-14 and have decided on it. 1-4x24 illuminated horseshoe/dot 100-1000yds bdc calibrated for 5.56 62gr approx $550. I was very pleased with my Burris FFII for a $200 scope; FFII is their budget line while XTR is top of the line!

Springfield xd magazines

I bought mine from Springfield xd magazines. I got the dark earth gun and no one had them in stock with the matching x-tension. I could find the black ones all day. From what i remember buying them from SA wasn't that much more than any place else. I didn't think 37 dollars (Springfield xd magazine) was to unreasonable. If I wasn't so picky about how the gun looked I would bought the mags without the x-tension piece. 11.00 dollars for that little piece of rubbery plastic is a bit much. I just checked Midway's web site, they are only 1 dollar cheaper than SA.

Rifle Scopes

I remember the thread unvieling the Rifle Scopes. most of Arfcom supported the man in his endeavor. I remember SMGLee supporting him enthusiastically which carries some weight apparently. Back when SMG was trumpeting EOtech and the masses lined up to fellate L3 there were a few who said "I dont like EOTech" while flamed roundly time vindicates us all. Similar story with this scope. Many of us wanted to like it but i remember a lot of people saying "please dont have it made in china"

The truth is, it is horrendously overpriced considering its the nicest NCStar you ever saw. I would have liked to have seen him license his awesome reticle to a reputable company instead of going with the Rifle Scope.
